From all the TV shows watched over time exploring the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle – the thought of possibly being in the middle of it didn’t even cross my mind as I cruised into Freeport.
On a mission to find stunning islands, clear blue water and perfect beaches, the bizarre disappearances of planes and boats in the area was a forgotten memory and certainly not highlighted in the travel brochures.
These 700 islands that make up the Bahamas are located off the coast of Florida, just above Cuba and boast miles of pristine white beaches.
The capital, Nassau, features pastel coloured wooden shops scattered amongst colonial buildings, historic forts, museums and galleries.
3 miles west of the city is where you’ll find the nightlife – restaurants, pubs and even a casino. Paradise Island is connected to Nassau by two bridges and is home to the world’s largest open air aquarium.
Grand Bahama is made up of pine forests and beautiful beaches yet again. The main tourist town of Freeport has a multitude of activities on offer – from golf courses to diving with sharks or dolphins.
The shopping is excellent, and the island also plays home to one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems.
The famous pink sand beaches of Eleuthera may have been what lured Lenny Kravitz to set up home here. Although the island is not as touristy as some of the other islands, quite a few businesses failed during the eighties and left the island with many abandoned resorts including a Club Med.
Things are starting to pick up again now with some major projects in the pipeline.
In short, the Bahamas lived up to its reputation of sugary beaches and crystal clear water – and I made it out unscathed.
